Welcome! It's going to be a busy summer...

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Jen Toguri and I'm a graduate student studying Instructional Technology.  I'm looking forward to taking COMM 144 this summer and doing my best to interact with everyone online. :)

Organizational communication will no doubt be an interesting topic.  I've spent the last 6 years working as a consultant in a huge management and technology consulting firm.  Currently, I'm focusing on creating, managing and delivering training programs for the firm's research and development group.  The organization has changed so much in the last few years and with new advances in technology, it is certainly a dynamic workplace!

Looking forward to 'meeting' you!

lotusblossom, since you're studying instructional technology, I'll be interested in your comments on the process of this online class. It seems to me that higher education is far behind the private sector in implementing effective instructional technology. Your thoughts?

so far, i've been very impressed with the process of this online class. it is evident that much planning was done to promote a successful class.

i think it is important to set clear expectations early and to engage as much as possible in an online learning community. the blogs and google discussion board are very useful (and easy) tools to support communication and collaboration.

while it might seem that higher education is a bit behind, there are still many barriers in the private sector to adopting technology solutions. for example, we tried using google's tools at work to collaborate, however security issues prohibited us from successfully doing this long-term. there are also well over 100,000 people in my company. delivering a stable technology solution to everyone in a timely manner also seems to have its own delays/problems. it can be many months before we see a mainstream technology product/solution implemented. one prime example...we are not scheduled to get Office 2007 for at least a few more months!
